AbstractThe TOPODATA project aims at the construction of a national database with elevation and morphometric variables calculated from the available SRTM data for Brazil. Data processing was designed to perform interpolation of the original SRTM-90m data by kriging (to 1 or nearly 30m resolution), followed by morphometric analyses of the produced Digital Elevation Model (DEM), through GIS-based algorithms. A first conception of this database includes digital maps (images) of the local variables height, slope angle, slope aspect, plan curvature, profile curvature and a talveg-divide delineation for drainage analyses and watershed partition. In a second conception, further developments are expected to bring more complex variables, such as slope length, caption area and other non-local terrain descriptors. Preliminary tests, evaluated through transects, visualizations and morphometric analyses in known watersheds, showed the usefulness of SRTM-90m data at relatively detailed scales after the developed pre-processing and analysis. Finally, the conditions for a proper development of this database in national full coverage are briefly discussed.
